Hoan Gallery at La Promenade Mall collaborates with 6 local artists for ABSTRACT 2022 exhibition

KUCHING, May 12: Hoan Gallery at La Promenade Mall is collaborating with six local artists to organise an abstract art show in Kuching, since the last one was held about 20 years ago.

Hock Seng Lee Sdn Bhd (HSL) in a statement today said, beginning May 14 until June 5, the show, titled ABSTRACT 2022, will be held at the new mallā€™s ground floor comprising of 33 unique pieces by six local artists, young and old.

According to Hoan Gallery owner Hoan Kee Huang, it is a great honour to co-organise this show at the mall.


ā€œThe artists and I have been talking about and preparing for this show for months. All artworks will be new and never seen before. It is rare to have an abstract art show in Sarawak,ā€ he said.

He added abstract art is still new here but it is gaining popularity and ABSTRACT 2022 will be something really different for the public to experience.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Artists Society’s (SAS) newly elected president David Chew and vice president Sebastian Jong are among the artists featured, plus Sheila Kho, Joanne Lau, Michelle Liou and Jane Ling.

Chew who is also who is also a member of the Malaysia National Visual Arts Gallery said that he considered his art in the style of abstract expressionism.

ā€œIn my childhood, I was trained in impressionism, and since 2000, Iā€™ve been doing abstracts. I use water colours, oil paints and acrylic paints. I especially like huge canvases,ā€ he said.

Chew and Jong will also conduct two art classes for the public where Chew will present the first class on May 21, from 2pm until 4pm, which is a workshop titled ā€˜Self-Actualisation Via Art Jammingā€™ which is suitable for those with or without painting skills, while Jong will conduct the second demo and class, ā€˜Pouring Art Experience with Sebastianā€™, on May 22, from 2pm until 4pm. Both classes are priced at RM50 each.

SAS vice president Sebastian Jong will also be conducting the classes at the mall.

The six artists mentioned are members of the Malaysia Visual Art Gallery. More recently, they were invited participant of the Sarawak Libraryā€™s 2021 Art Show.

All art on display at La Promenade Mall will be on sale.

La Promenade Mall is located along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway. It opened in early 2021, and has a ā€˜Support Sarawakā€™ tenancy policy. Almost all shops are local brand names, from NOMS to Black Bean Coffee and Tea, from Hock King Authentic Chicken Rice to Zoro by Domus.

Hoan Gallery, on level three, is featuring an exhibition called ā€˜Rebirth – Sarawak is Art, Past & Presentā€™.

The mall is the first in Sarawak to be Green Building Index certified, an accreditation it shares with the adjoining office building, HSL Tower.
