SIBU, Dec 5: Christmas is still weeks away but Santa Claus already seems to be in a potentially sticky situation in Sibu town.

A big red figure resembling Santa Claus can be seen hanging from the side of a tower at Tun Tuanku Bujang Square, seemingly trying to climb up.

Donning a red coat with black leather belt and boots, with his head topped with a red hat, ‘Santa Claus’ is carrying a green bag that we can assume it is full of gifts for children.

The Santa Claus display is actually part of the decorations installed for the upcoming Christmas Festival 2023 organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) from Dec 8 to 25.

The festival’s organising chairman Councillor Simon Wee Kim Choon told DayakDaily that the Santa Claus display was installed on Dec 1 for the Christmas Tree Contest which was participated by 12 corporate bodies and churches.

They are I-Concept Event Agency, Daesco Sdn Bhd, Sing Kwong Salim Sdn Bhd, C&C Gallery, JN Littleshop, Win Hotel Sdn Bhd, Kingwood Hotel, Zoo Bee, Doremart, Masland Methodist Church, Xin Fu Yuan Methodist Church and Tian En Methodist Church.

“Another attraction is an electric train which can accommodate 15 persons and it will be plying around the Square,” he said via WhatsApp recently.

Themed “A Classic Christmas”, the festival will see more than 80 food and beverage (F&B) and merchandise stalls offering all types of food and items for sale to the public.

Other festival highlights include stage performances conducted by various churches in Sibu, food trucks, and dazzling light displays.

A lighting-up ceremony is scheduled to take place on Dec 8, at 7.30pm.

Additionally, a Christmas Zumba party will take place on Dec 23 which is expected to welcome about 500 participants. — DayakDaily
