SIBU, Dec 16: The electorates has been urged to support Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak in the 12th Sarawak Election so as to prevent it from being wiped out from the state.
Speaking at a press conference at Sibu DAP headquarters today, Johor DAP chief, Liew Chin Tong said this election is a difficult one for the party after Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that he was confident they could win all 82 seats in the State.
“It is a difficult election for us as Abang Johari had said they can win all 82 seats. We want to avoid this so we are asking the voters, if possible, to focus your votes on DAP and to help us avoid a wipeout. This (a wipeout) is not good for democracy,” he said.
Liew also feared that the party might not do well in the election as their performance in the previous State and General Elections was not stable.
“I was here in the 2010 Sibu by-election and have seen that the election results swung in our favour and it has also swung against us. We won 12 seats in the 2011 State Election, won in the 2013 General Election but suffered a double setback in the 2016 State Election but won handsomely in the 2018 General Elections,” he said.
He hoped that the party could win against all odds as this election, they are facing several obstacles due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes the prohibition of physical campaigning in seats which the party is contesting as well as strict standard operating procedures.
“DAP started in the State in 1978. We won our first Parliamentary seat in Sibu (1982) and won our first state seat (Bukit Assek) in the 2006 election, and we are here to stay for the long haul to serve and will not disappear just like at one time an Opposition party did after a State election,” he said. ā DayakDaily
