Heavy rain lashes Kuching: Flooding submerges homes, roads cut off, traffic detoured

KUCHING, March 2: A heavy downpour that hit the city last night has led to major flooding is several flood-prone locations, with houses inundated, roads being cut off, and traffic disrupted this morning.

Among the worst affected areas was Kampung Sinar Budi Baru near Desa Wira in Batu Kawah, with several houses submerged in water up to chest height.

When contacted by DayakDaily today, a resident of the area, Mohd Roji, said the water began rising at 2.30am and reached its peak at 5.30am.


He also alerted the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak for assistance in deploying boats to temporarily evacuate some residents.

Mohd Roji said that his house was flooded with waist-high floodwaters, and access to the residential area has also been cut off.

Although water has receded slightly, the area remains flooded at press time.

Other affected areas included MJC new township, Jalan Batu Kawah, Kota Sentosa in 7th Mile, 4th Mile and 3rd Mile.

Many motorists on Jalan Batu Kawah were forced to take detours as certain sections of the road were inundated by water.

Bomba Sarawak’s flood watch also reported flooding in Kampung Segong in Bau, Jalan Rantau Panjang Biawak in Lundu, Kampung Sungai Bedil in Petra Jaya, Sebang Plai in Serian, and Taman Beverly and Taman Duranda Emas in the 18th Mile.

However, the situation in these areas are under control as the water level is gradually receding, with no evacuation required.

Firefighters are currently focusing its evacuation operation in Taman Desa Wira. — DayakDaily
