KUCHING, August 17: The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has pledged to quickly rebuild or repair those houses in RPR Taman Sri Malihah that were destroyed or damaged by a fire last Monday.

In the incident, four houses were razed to the ground, four were partially destroyed and two had minor damage.

HDC chief executive officer Mohd Asman Ahmad told a press conference at HDC headquarters here that the rebuilding and repairing work could only start after insurance matters had been cleared, and that normally takes about 21 days after the incident.

“We need to rebuild and repair these houses quickly because the victims are still paying their loans for these houses, and these houses are under HDC.

“We have talked to the victims and house owners: we will do our best to hasten the rebuilding and repair works so that they can move back in,” said Asman, adding that the insurance firm put the initial estimate for the damage at RM200,000 in all.

Meanwhile Tupong assemblyman Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman said the 40 plus victims were still staying at the Taman Malihah 2 shelter.

He said he would sort out temporary accommodation for them at empty flats in Taman Sri Wangi, Demak Laut and Taman Dahlia in Matang.

“We need to quickly repair and rebuild their houses because they are still being paid. We welcome any donations from anyone to help ease the burden of the victims — clothes and food, especially,” said Fazzruddin. — DayakDaily
