KUCHING, Nov 26: The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated its Operations Room in Putrajaya to strengthen coordination and ensure continuous support for Malaysians affected by the severe flooding in Hat Yai and surrounding areas.
The ministry urged Malaysians in affected areas who require assistance and are unable to reach Malaysian representatives in Thailand to immediately contact the Operations Room at +603-8887 4570 or dutyofficer@kln.gov.my.
In a Bernama news, the ministry said the move follows ongoing efforts by the Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla and the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok, both of which remain on full alert and continue assisting Malaysians on the ground.
“To date, more than 6,300 Malaysians have safely returned home, and most of those still in Hat Yai have been identified and are staying in high-rise hotels.
“Those who have yet to register or receive assistance are advised to contact either the Consulate General in Songkhla or the Embassy in Bangkok without delay,” it said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 25).
Meanwhile, the Thai Cabinet on Tuesday declared the worsening floods in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, as a “state of emergency”. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said significant aid has been deployed across the affected areas.
“For locations that require immediate help but remain inaccessible to rescue teams, additional machinery, equipment and reinforced manpower will be mobilised as directed,” he said after chairing the Cabinet meeting.
Earlier, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported tens of thousands affected, with 1,228 households in 16 sub-districts evacuated and 697,231 people impacted across Songkhla Province. — DayakDaily
