KUCHING, June 9: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will not ‘rock the boat’ led by Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim to ensure the longevity of a stable Federal government, says secretary-general Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said GPS will give its full commitment whether it be building infrastructure, revamping the economy or achieving the status of a progressive country, as long as it is for the good of Malaysia.
“That is why GPS does not dwell on politicking.
“And we will not rock the boat because we feel we should give this unity government and Anwar a chance to achieve their objective, which is to recover the economy and to create a more comfortable and conducive living environment for Malaysians.
“That can only be achieved by ensuring a stable Federal government and that is why the Sarawak government has no issue working with the Federal government now,” he said in an exclusive interview with DayakDaily here today.
While the GPS’ stance may sound cliché, Nanta who is Malaysian Minister of Works and Kapit MP stressed that this is the truth.
He cited the political crisis during the Pakatan Harapan administration under the leadership of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2020.
“Even when we (GPS) were the Opposition in 2018 and 2019 during PH’s administration, we didn’t cause trouble to them. They collapsed because they themselves caused the problem.
“And yet, at the time when they were about to collapse, our commitment was ‘Hey Tun Mahathir, don’t resign. You should stay to carry on and to provide for a stable government’ (sic). But as we all know, he resigned so the government collapsed.
“Imagine that we were the Opposition (but) we still supported Tun Mahathir to stay as prime minister at that crucial time in March 2020 so that the Federal government didn’t collapse.
“Isn’t it ironic? Usually, the Opposition would love to see the government collapse but not GPS at that time because we were more concerned about the government being stable,” he elaborated.
He also mentioned another example following the 15th General Election (GE15) where in a matter of few days, GPS helped PH to form the government despite being political foes and enemies during the polls.
He clarified that GPS is not an opportunist as it only wishes to have a stable government which explained why it had agreed to the call of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to form the current unity government. — DayakDaily
