KUCHING, Dec 6: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali is set to battle it out with Abang Halil Abang Naili of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and Othman Abdillah of Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak (Sedar) for N7 Samariang in the 12th Sarawak Election.

The names of candidates were announced by Election Commission (EC) returning officer Mohamad Faisal Adenan after the nomination process at SMK Semerah Padi in Kuching today.

Hasidah, 52, who is the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) women treasurer, will be defending the seat that she won for three consecutive terms since 2006.

She succeeded her mother Datuk Sharifah Mordiah Tuanku Fauzi who did not seek reelection after winning the seat during the 2001 Sarawak Election.

In the 2016 Sarawak Election, Hasidah won the seat under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket against Yusof Assidiqqi Ahmad Sharkawi of Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and Nani Sahari of Amanah with 7,760 majority votes.

This time around, she will face 61-year-old businessman Abang Halil, who is now contesting for the third time and a 65-year-old contractor Othman who is a first timer in contesting in an election. — DayakDaily
