KUCHING, Nov 5: Both Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Parti Se-Islam Malaysia (PAS) have fielded their youngest candidates, 37-year-old Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-PBB) and 35-year-old Hamdan Sani (PAS) respectively, in P201 Batang Lupar for the coming polls.

In a three-cornered battle, the two young chaps will be facing off with 70-year-old Well@Maxwell Rojis (PH-Amanah).

Mohamad Shafizan was the earliest to arrive at Batang Lupar’s nomination centre at the Sri Aman District Office today at 8.20am while being accompanied by proposer Ariffin Akif and seconder Awg Nazit Awg Sohor.

Also there to support the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) boy were PBB permanent chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Batang Lupar incumbent Dato Sri Rohani Abdul Karim, Sebuyau assemblyman Datuk Julaihi Narawi, Beting Maro assemblyman Datuk Razaili Gapor, and Lingga assemblyman Dayang Noraazah Awg Sohor.

Later, at about 8.27am, Hamdan arrived with his proposer Ayu Narawi and seconder Noriszawati Suhaili.

Meanwhile, Maxwell arrived at 8.50am with his proposer Beji@Nyaring Jaban and seconder Christopher Keli Lampin.

In the 2018 General Election, Rohani successfully defended the seat by garnering 14,204 votes with a majority of 10,277 against Wan Abdillah Wan Ahmad (3,927 votes) of PAS and Amanah’s Narudin Mentali (2,020 votes).

Rohani, who served as Batang Lupar MP from 2004 to 2022, has called it a day and gracefully moved aside for Mohamad Shafizan to be GPS’ candidate for the constituency. — DayakDaily
