KUCHING, Dec 18: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) finally recaptured Kota Sentosa after losing the seat to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the past three Sarawak Elections.

GPS candidate Wilfred Yap from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) wrestled back the seat by polling 5,806 votes, winning by a majority of 1,683 votes.

He faced Sarawak DAP’s Michael Kong Feng Nian who managed to garner 4,123 votes, Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Datuk Lau Pang Heng who got 2,328 votes, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Lue Cheng Hing who got 1,015 votes and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party’s (Aspirasi) Tan Kok Chiang who got 215 votes.

Kota Sentosa was one of DAP’s strongholds with Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen tenaciously holding the seat in the last three elections.

In the 2016 Sarawak Election, Chong and Wilfred Yap met in a straight fight where Chong managed to beat Yap with a majority of 2,819 votes by polling 10,047 votes against the latter’s 7,228 votes.

In this election, Chong chose to stand in Padungan after its incumbent Wong King Wei left DAP to pursue his career as a lawyer.
