Govt approves advanced radar systems for improved airspace surveillance in Sarawak

KUCHING, Nov 17: Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah has announced the government’s approval for the installation of Primary Surveillance Radar/Secondary Surveillance Radar (PSR/SSR) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) in Sarawak.

This initiative, part of the Air Traffic Management System Replacement and Improvement project in the Kota Kinabalu Flight Information Region (KKFIR), aims to enhance airspace surveillance and ensure the safety and efficiency of air traffic management.

Hasbi emphasised that this project aligns with the National Transport Policy (2019-2030), focusing on improving safety, integration, connectivity, and accessibility across various transportation modes.

“The government is committed to strengthening enforcement and regulation to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations, enhancing safety, quality, and reliability of services,” Hasbi said during a press conference after officiating the Radar Operation For The Replacement And Upgrading of the Sabah and Sarawak Air Traffic Management System KKFIR ceremony today.

The KKFIR project, part of the 11th Malaysia Plan, comes with a total cost of RM183 million.

Hasbi highlighted the completion of radar surveillance systems in Kuching and overall airspace coverage in Sarawak, emphasising the shared radar data between the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) for airspace security.

The project includes the replacement of radars in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, the addition of ADS-B components in Kuching, Bintulu, and Kota Kinabalu, and the replacement of communication equipment in Miri, Sarawak.

It also involves replacing air traffic management automation in the Center Air Traffic Control Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and at Sibu and Tawau Control Towers and Miri Control Towers.

The ceremony was attended by Ministry of Transport deputy chief secretary Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid, its divisional development secretary Mohd Aidi Mohd Hussin, Malaysia Regional Civil Aviation Sarawak Enforcement Director Hajijah Mohd Bujang, and Ministry of Transport Sarawak Divisional Chief for Air Transport Zulkarnian Rosli. — DayakDaily
