KUCHING, April 4: Government and private agency officials, students, and housewives are top victims of scams cases in Kuching.
According to Kuching District police chief Ahsmon Bajah, the victims are aged between 19 to 70-years-old.
“Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) has opened 49 investigation papers under Section 420 of the Penal Code from January until March 2024 involving scammers with a total loss of RM2,940,124,” he said in a statement today.
He said the scammers’ modus operandi included online scams through phone calls, and advertisements on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Wechat and many others.
He also said that those that fell victim were instructed by the scammers to submit their banking information and transfer money into a third party bank account.
“(Out of the 49 cases) a total of 33 investigation papers have been brought to court since January until March,” he added.
Ahsmon advised the public to be careful and not be deceived by any unknown phone calls or advertisements on social media.
If there is any doubt or problem, he urged the public to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) line at 997 or go to the nearest police station or bank for advice. — DayakDaily
