KUCHING, Sept 26: A RM50 incentive from their coach provided an unexpected boost of motivation for Sarawak’s tenpin bowling pair, Abg Yahya Abg Azhar and Nur Syazwani Marais, as they won the gold medal in the TPB4 category during the 2024 Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma) held today at Megalanes Sarawak, Emart Batu Kawa.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, trailing in the fourth set, the duo from the Land of the Hornbills were spurred by their coach, Myron Khoo, who offered an additional RM50 reward if they could achieve a ‘clean game’.

This extra push proved effective, as they scored a total of 2244 pinfalls, surpassing the Selangor team’s 2188 and 2111 pinfalls.

“I was challenged by Coach Myron, who said he would give RM50 if we achieved a ‘clean game.’ I stayed focused throughout the match,” Abg Yahya told reporters after the game.

Abg Yahya, who has represented Malaysia in various international bowling tournaments, also reflected on how his bowling journey began back in primary school.

“A teacher at school invited me to try bowling, and later my uncle, who also played the sport, trained with me,” he said.

In second place, Selangor’s team, represented by Muhammad Danial Azrai and Muhammad Hazmi, collected 2188 pinfalls, while their teammates, Elyana Johari and Syed Umar, secured third place with 2111 pinfalls.

This victory further solidifies Sarawak’s standing in Para Sukma’s tenpin bowling arena, with Abg Yahya and Nur Syazwani’s inspiring story emerging as one of the highlights of the competition. — DayakDaily
