SIBU, Nov 28: The 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) seized 1,346 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM323,040 including tax in a raid here yesterday.
Its assistant commanding officer, DSP Frediel Nyambong, said the raid was conducted by 10 men from the Sibu GOF battalion during “Ops Libas” at 1pm, at a storage at Jalan Temedak.
“The raid resulted to a confiscation of 1,346 carton of cigarettes of various brands worth RM323,040, including tax. However, no arrest was made during the raid as no one come forward to claim the confiscated items,” he said in a press statement.
Frediel revealed that the smuggler’s modus operandi uses a vacant house or storage unit to store items such as cigarettes, beers and firecrackers before distributing around Sibu.
“All the items were confiscated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and was handed over to Sibu district Crime Investigation Department for further action,” he continued.
To date, the 10th Battalion Sibu GOF have confiscated RM8,730,997.64 worth of items and arrested 88 people involving illegal logging and sawmill operations, as well as smuggling activities. — DayakDaily
