KUCHING, Dec 26: Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) seized some RM48.85 million worth of various contraband items such as cigarettes, alcohol, logs and machinery this year.
In congratulating PGA Sarawak, state Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said the success rate has jumped as high as 300 per cent compared to last year.
“This year, they seized RM48.85 million worth of goods from 141 cases statewide, whereas it was RM13.49 million from 89 cases in 2018,” Ramli said at a press conference today.
This year’s operations also saw the arrests of 316 foreigners and 100 Malaysians.
Meanwhile, Ramli said the police are preparing the force and assessing security along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border, following the move by the Indonesian government to shift its capital to East Kalimantan by 2024.
“We need to prepare for all sorts of security issues. As you know, the Sarawak-Kalimantan border is about 2,000km long and that is huge. Smuggling cases is a common issue, but after Indonesia moved its capital over to Kalimantan, this will turn into a more important issue to tackle,” he asserted. — DayakDaily
