KUCHING, Jan 19: A General Operations Force corporal claimed trial to the charge of conveyancing smuggled migrants.
Azwan Adnan pleaded not guilty to the charge framed.
Counsel Osman Ibrahim who represented the accused pleaded with the court to allow the accused to be released on bail as the accused is getting married soon.
High Court Judge Haji Alwi Haji Abdul Wahab allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties and ordered the accused to surrender his travel documents and report to the nearest police station fortnightly.
According to the charge sheet, Azwan was charged with being the driver of a Perodua Alza involved in the offence of conveyancing two Indonesian migrants, at the junction of SMK Tebakang, at about 9.40am, on December 9, 2020.
He was charged under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of five years and liable to fine not exceeding RM250,000, or with both, upon conviction.
