KUCHING, July 21: The presence of a giant crocodile on the banks of Sungai Nyelong, which had raised concern among local residents, finally ended yesterday (July 20) with its successful capture by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

According to a TVS news report, the crocodile, which had frequently been spotted near the Taman Sri Nyelong area, had sparked fear among nearby residents, particularly small-scale fishermen who fish in the river.

Dubbed the ‘ruler’ of Sungai Nyelong by locals, the crocodile was finally ensnared in a trap set near the old ferry terminal, marking the end of a prolonged period of anxiety for the community.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Arrahman Chik said they received a call from SFC around 12 noon requesting assistance to relocate the captured crocodile.

“A team was dispatched to the location and found a large crocodile trapped in a cage. We assisted in safely moving the cage with the crocodile to land,” he said.

The operation was carried out in cooperation with the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarikei and was fully completed by 12.50pm.

The successful capture not only brought relief to worried residents but also demonstrated the effectiveness of swift action and inter-agency collaboration in addressing wildlife threats. — DayakDaily
