KUCHING, July 18: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) and Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB) has launched a programme to provide Setel credits in exchange of used cooking oil in Petronas stations.
Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof who is also Minister of Plantation of Commodities said for starters, three Petronas stations have been identified for the used cooking oil collection centres namely in Subang Bestari, Kota Kemuning 1 and Putrajaya 1.
Nevertheless, the expansion of the programme is expected to be done in stages in the near future.
The sale of used cooking oil at Petronas stations will give a small return to the seller where the sale proceeds will be credited in the Setel app account and can be redeemed to fill up with fuel or buy goods at Mesra Shop.
Setel is Petronas’ app which enables users to simplify their payments at petrol stations through the use of an integrated e-wallet.
“Cooking oil used is not recommended to be used repeatedly because it can be harmful to health.
“Therefore, the used cooking oil needs to be managed well and should not be thrown into the sink or poured into the drain or packed in plastic and put in the trash as done by a few consumers or traders.
“This action will cause the occurrence of blocked pipe incidents which will ultimately require high costs to repair,” he said when launching the Used Cooking Oil Collection Programme held in Putrajaya today.
Fadillah further said the used cooking oil is collected to become a main source of raw material to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to fulfil the requirements of Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) – an international scheme to reduce carbon footprint and reach the carbon neutral growth target for the international aviation sector. — DayakDaily
