KUCHING, Nov 19: Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate for P196 Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen casted his vote at SMK Kuching High, one of the polling stations for P195 Bandar Kuching, at approximately 8.56am this morning.
Chong arrived at the polling centre at 8.52am, accompanied by his wife, Grace Tan.
His parents–Chong Siew Chiang and Sim Yaw Sik–were also present at the same polling station, having arrived much earlier to vote before meeting their son.
After registering for verification, Chong, who is also the Sarawak DAP chairman, was greeted by a few of his fans, with whom he posed for photographs.
One fan in particular was an enthusiastic 91-year-old grandmother who shook hands with him and wished the P196 Stampin candidate luck.
Chong, who was seen to be in a jovial mood, casted his vote and was out of the room by approximately 9am.
When met by reporters after casting his vote, Chong said, “I have done my part as a citizen, exercised my right as a voter this morning. I hope for the best for the country.”
This morning, voters for the Bandar Kuching constituency began trickling into the SMK Kuching High polling station as early as 8am.
The majority of the early arrivals who showed up to vote were senior citizens.
DAP, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) are in a three-cornered battle for the P195 Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
