GE14: May 9 declared public holiday

KUCHING, April 11: The Prime Minister’s Department has declared May 9 as a public holiday.

A notice from the Prime Minister’s Department today said following the announcement by the Election Commission (EC) that the 14th General Election will be held on May 9, the government had decided to set the day as an additional public holiday for the whole country.

This, according to the statement, is to allow Malaysians to exercise their duty as voters.

The announcement of May 9 as a public holiday is made in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and Federal Territories.

For Sarawak and Sabah, the state governments may make the announcement based on their respective Public Holidays Ordinance.

Following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s announcement on April 6 concerning the dissolution of Parliament, the EC announced on April 10 that nomination is set on April 28, early voting on May 5 and polling on May 9. ā€” DayakDaily
