KUCHING, June 21: Dabai ice cream and homemade chilli sauce are among the unique food items available at the Gawai Bazaar 2022, held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound from June 17 to 26, to attract tourists to sample the local cuisine.
Further elaborating this, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the bazaar aims to boost the local economy and promote the goods and services offered by the Dayak community.
“We hope that the Gawai Bazaar would attract tourists so that we can introduce them to the authentic cuisine of the Sarawakian people,” he said at the opening ceremony of the bazaar last night (June 20).
The Deputy Premier said that there are approximately 129 stalls at the bazaar selling food, beverages, handicrafts, and art products.
“We’ll see how the Gawai Bazaar goes this year and maybe add more stalls next year,” he added.
He also commended the bazaar for how well-organised it is and for being able to attract a large number of people.
“This means there is a good chance of making a living with this microbusiness,” he said.
Meanwhile, the bazaar was teeming with people of all ages and races due to the enticing presentation and aroma of the food.
Various activities will also be organised throughout the 10-day event, which will be held from 4pm to 11pm on weekdays and 10am to 11pm on weekends.
The activities planned throughout the bazaar include Dayak cultural art performances, live band performances, Kumang and Keling contests for those aged 9 to 15, Gawai Idol, and performances by local artists. — DayakDaily
