KUCHING, July 13: Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believes that the future of cruise tourism in Sarawak is bright.
He said Sarawak will become a premier cruise destination in the region, with the ‘Royal Kuching Cruise’, as well as other initiatives, contributing significantly to the vision, attracting international visitors and showcasing the State’s unique allure.
“I can see that river-related tourism products, such as river cruises, are very interesting and can be lifted, as we can see in Europe with the ‘Danube River Cruise’, which is very popular.
“And I believe that in Sarawak, cruise tourism can be lifted, particularly along the Rajang River and in Kuching, which has a river running through it,” he told reporters yesterday when met after officiating at the launch of Royal Kuching Cruise at the Kuching Waterfront here.
Abdul Karim pointed out that in Sarawak, cities grow by the river because the river was the only main route of transportation in the past.
“(Therefore), the ministry will suggest to cruise operators like this to create activities in every village along the river’s edge to receive tourists,” he added.
Moreover, he emphasised that when cruises operate on rivers, in addition to the sunset, neon lights are an additional attraction.
“I also hope that the city council will help to illuminate the riverside road with neon lights so that those on this cruise will be able to enjoy the view,” he remarked.
Earlier in Abdul Karim’s speech, he said that Royal Kuching Cruise, with its state-of-the-art catamaran design, twin main engines, and smooth ride, promises an unforgettable experience for travellers from near and far.
“It offers a unique opportunity to explore Sarawak’s pristine rivers while allowing oneself to immerse in the State’s vibrant cultures to create lasting memories.
“What sets the Royal Kuching Cruise apart is its ability to cater to diverse audiences and preferences.
“From families seeking relaxation and adventure to culture enthusiasts eager to learn about Sarawak’s rich heritage, the Royal Kuching Cruise promises something for everyone.
“With a wide range of onboard entertainment, and culinary delights, guests will be immersed in an unforgettable journey that showcases the best of Sarawak.”
Meanwhile, Royal Kuching Cruise organiser Janice Wong noted in her speech that the cruise has been designed to cater to a maximum of 168 passengers.
The Royal Kuching Cruise provided a captivating two-hour round trip along the Sarawak River during the launching ceremony. With approximately 50 guests on board, everyone had the chance to savour the refreshing breeze and marvel at the enchanting experience of nighttime tourism.
Among those on board were Abdul Karim’s wife, Datin Zuraini Abdul Jabbar; MTCP Sarawak Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan; MTCP Sarawak permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini; Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor; and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor Datu Junaidi Reduan. — DayakDaily
