Funeral gathering causes Covid-19 outbreak at Taman Pelita with 6 cases

KUCHING, April 29: Yet another funeral gathering has resulted in a Covid-19 cluster, this time at Taman Pelita in Jalan Sultan Tengah, Petra Jaya here after a 22-year-old woman infected five other people, thus triggering the Taman Pelita Cluster in Kuching.

The Taman Pelita Cluster is one of six new Covid-19 clusters declared in Sarawak today.

Of the remaining new clusters today, two are in Kuching namely the Tabuan Jaya Cluster involving a secondary school with 22 cases and Tabuan Melayu Cluster (five cases) while the three other clusters are the Durin Cluster in Bau (six cases), Sileng Dayak Cluster in Lundu (72 cases) and Sains Bakam Cluster in Miri (17 cases).


The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily updates on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, revealed that the Taman Pelita Cluster stemmed from a funeral gathering that took place on April 14.

The index case or Case 25,744 is a 22-year-old local woman whose status came to light via symptomatic screening on April 21 at a private hospital in Kuching.

Further investigations and close contact tracing uncovered five more positive cases.

As of today, SDMC reported, 82 individuals have been screened, whereby 52 tested negative and 24 are still awaiting lab tests results.

With six new clusters, Sarawak now has 71 active clusters, from which 10 clusters recorded an increase in daily infections to a total of 50 cases today.

The clusters are Melugu with 12 cases, Icom and Pondok (8 cases each), Jalan Disa (7 cases), Duranda Emas (6 cases), Tarat Tani (4 cases), Disso (2 cases), while Kampung Tengah, Sungai Tuah and Jalan Maju has one case each. — DayakDaily
