Funeral clusters — Gelong in Kapit sees new 25 cases, Kpg Emperoh another 5

KUCHING, Feb 27: Two clusters of Covid-19 which emerged due to funeral gatherings have added 30 new cases of Covid-19 today.

The Gelong Cluster of Covid-19 in Kapit reported the most number of new coronavirus cases.


According to a press statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, the Gelong Cluster witnessed 25 new cases of coronavirus.

With the additional 25 cases, the cumulative number of people infected has increased to 176 people.

A total of 223 individuals from the cluster have been swabbed for Covid-19, whereby 47 individuals have tested negative and none awaiting results for the Covid-19 swab test.

To recap, the Gelong Cluster in Kapit was identified by the State Health Department on Feb 16 following the screening of a 47-year-old symptomatic individual at the Kapit health clinic on Feb 13.

After investigation was carried out, the index case was found to have attended the funeral ceremony of his late father between Jan 30 and Feb 2.

The funeral ceremony was also believed to be attended by close family members.

Following active contract tracing and case detection conducted by the State Health Department, more Covid-19 cases were discovered.

Another cluster which involved a  funeral ceremony was the Kampung Emperoh Cluster in Kuching.

The cluster has reported five new cases today which added to the total tally of 160 individuals being found to be positive for Covid-19.

A total of 600 individuals linked to the cluster have been screened while 300 individuals were tested negative and 140 individuals were awaiting the results of the Covid-19 swab test.

Meanwhile, a cluster which involved a social gathering in a residence in Jalan Muhibbah in Betong has also reported 17 new cases.

The cluster which was initiated on Feb 23 has seen 52 individuals being infected with  coronavirus while 300 persons have been swabbed.

As of today, 69 individuals connected to the cluster are still awaiting the laboratory test results for their Covid-19 swab test.

In the meantime, there are 27 active clusters of Covid-19 in Sarawak. Five active clusters reported new cases.

They are the Buloh Cluster in Selangau which reported 27 new cases, Gelong (25), Jalan Muhibbah in Betong (17), Emperoh Jambu in Kuching (5) and Sungai Bakong in Meradong (1). — DayakDaily
