KUCHING, Dec 27: From pioneering the green and hydrogen economy to surpassing tourism targets and securing significant investments, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has successfully rescued Sarawak from the stigma of being labelled a ‘poor and backward’ State in Malaysia.

Reflecting on Sarawak’s achievements this year, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan highlighted that Sarawak continues to be recognised as a high-income economy State in Malaysia.

“For several years, our State budget has exceeded the double-digit billion mark. Under our Premier’s leadership, we have been freed from the negative label of being a poor and backward State in Malaysia.

“His innovative revenue re-engineering strategies have redeemed us from that perception,” Snowdan said in a statement today.

He further said the State’s tourism sector also made significant strides in 2024, surpassing its target of four million visitors and further elevating Sarawak’s global reputation as a top travel destination.

In the business sector, he commented that Sarawak is set to acquire a new airline, a milestone that has not been achieved by any other state in Malaysia.

Furthermore, Sarawak is finalising plans to secure a controlling stake in a banking institution, reinforcing its position as a key player in both regional and global markets.

Moving forward, Snowdan believes that 2025 holds great promise, with major infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges set to be completed, significantly improving both land and cyber connectivity.

“Budget 2025, with an allocation of RM15.3 billion, is a testament that these projects are on track for completion.

“Additionally, numerous projects undertaken by the nine regional development agencies, such as Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA), Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA), and others, will accelerate the development of rural infrastructure,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
