BELAGA, Aug 23: Sungai Asap has been proposed as a smart agriculture hub to accelerate the digital transformation of Sarawak’s interior agricultural sector.
Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said the proposed development of an Agriculture Transformation Centre (ATC) based on the Smart Agriculture Centre concept in Sungai Asap was in line with the implementation of the Sungai Asap Digital Village (SADV).
“My aspiration is for the ministry to consider developing an Agriculture Transformation Centre (ATC) based on the Smart Agriculture Centre concept in Sungai Asap.
“This proposal is highly relevant as the SADV project is currently being implemented in our area,” he said at the handover ceremony for the Sungai Asap Sub-District Agricultural Station building site at the Sungai Asap Sub-District Agricultural Station in Belaga on Saturday (Aug 22).
Kennedy said SADV should not merely provide internet facilities but should instead serve as a foundation for the Sungai Asap community’s economic transformation.
According to him, good digital connectivity would enable technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and drones to be utilised in the agricultural sector.
“These technologies can help farmers monitor crops, manage irrigation, analyse data, and improve productivity more efficiently.
“From a digital village, we want to move towards digital agriculture,” he said.
He said these technologies could also attract more youths to the agricultural sector, which is becoming increasingly modern, commercial, and competitive.
Kennedy said the effort was important to produce a new generation of modern agropreneurs capable of making agriculture a better and viable source of income. — DayakDaily
