KUCHING, Feb 9: The federal government will offer free influenza vaccines to senior citizens with comorbidities at selected government clinics nationwide, starting this month.

According to a circular dated January 24, signed by the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Director-General, Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, this initiative builds on earlier phases of the program, which initially targeted frontline healthcare workers.

“The influenza immunisation program will now be extended to senior citizens aged 60 and above who have at least one comorbidity starting in February 2025.

“However, implementation depends on the criteria of eligible recipients and vaccine supply,” he said,” he stated.

To qualify for the vaccination, senior citizens must have at least one of the following comorbidities:
• Diabetes Mellitus
• Chronic respiratory diseases (e.g., bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic lung disease)
• Chronic heart and vascular diseases
• Obesity
• Hypertension
• Dyslipidemia
• Chronic kidney disease

Eligible senior citizens can receive the vaccine at designated government clinics through appointments via MySejahtera, walk-in visits, or during routine medical check-ups.

The vaccine stocks will be distributed across all states and subsequently to the vaccination centres.

The program is set to take effect on February 18, 2025, as part of efforts to reduce hospitalisations and deaths linked to influenza.
