Four taxi drivers arrested for violating MCO in Sibu

SIBU, March 29: Four taxi drivers have been arrested for violating the movement control order (MCO) last night.

Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, said at about 11.50pm on Saturday (March 28), a joint police and armed forces MCO enforcement team were conducting a roadblock near Lanang Bridge when the four suspects, driving their own taxi, showed up.

“They arrived from Kuching to pick up passengers in Sibu, who had earlier made bookings for their services,” he said when contacted.

He said the four have been remanded under Regulation 7 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM1,000 or jail not more than six months or both.

He added that they are also being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for voluntarily obstructed the enforcement team from discharging of their duties. — DayakDaily
