KUCHING, Dec 25: Former Science, Technology and Environment Minister Tan Sri Law Hieng Ding passed away this morning at the age of 82 in Kuala Lumpur.

Born in Sibu in 1936, Law graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1961.

He then served as a councillor and later chairman of a local council between 1964 to 1981

In 1982, he was elected as MP of Sarikei where he served for six terms until 2004.

Law was also a former Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) deputy president.

SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian in a social media post expressed his sorrow and regrets over the death of the veteran politician.

“We lost a great Sarawakian who had served and fought for Sarawak in the Malaysian cabinet for 27 years (Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Malaysia, 1990-2004) as well as a loyal SUPP party member and leader (deputy party president) and a very close family friend of my parents (known as Tan Sri since I was a child).”

He said even when Law had difficulty in expressing himself, Law was still very concerned about SUPP when Dr Sim met up with Law in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year when Dr Sim was there for Lan Berambeh 2018.

Dr Sim who is also Local Government and Housing Minister said his great regret was that he was unable to fulfil Law’s wish of having a road named after the latter.

“Sad that I am unable to complete a mission for Tan Sri while he was alive, to have a road named in his honour in Sarikei in recognising his services as MP Sarikei (1982-2008),” said Dr Sim. — DayakDaily
