Former Housing Ministry permanent secretary Affandi Keli among three victims of Kg Gita fire

KUCHING, Nov 14: Former permanent secretary to the Housing Ministry Affandi Keli was among three people who perished in a fire at Lorong Bunga Tongkeng in Kampung Gita here last night (Nov 13).

Firefighters discovered the bodies of Affandi, who is also a former Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) director, along with his daughter Aneeqa Affandi, 35, and niece Nor Hasyidah Ajis, 22, inside the residence.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said in a statement that they received a call about the incident at 7.03pm and that the bodies of all three victims were discovered on the upper floor of the house.


As soon as the fire was brought under control, firefighters climbed a ladder to the upper floor of the house to rescue the victims.

The two-story terrace house was completely destroyed in the fire. The fire also destroyed four parked cars at the house, while another car was damaged by 50 per cent.

As of 10pm, overhaul work on the upper floor of the house was still being carried out.

At the scene was Bomba Sarawak director Datu Khirudin Drahman and several police officers.

The police have opened an investigation into the fire. Earlier today, a Bomba K9 unit was at the location to assist in investigations.
