MIRI, June 30: A Miri Narcotics Crime Investigation team on Saturday night arrested a 28-year-old man from a neighbouring county for allegedly possessing drugs.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah said cops detained the suspect at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration checkpoint at 11.40pm.

He added, the suspect was arrested following a tip-off.

“The suspect, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was stopped at the checkpoint by our men, and upon checking the inside of his car, they discovered four packets believed to contain illegal substances —methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA (Ecstacy) with street value of RM24,000,” said Lim when contacted.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had no previous records in drugs related cases.

It is believed the suspect was on his way back to Brunei Darussalam, after travelling to Miri earlier that day.

For record, the border checkpoint closes at 12am.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction. — DayakDaily
