Flying stone incidents prompt plan for 12 CCTV installations in Batu Kawa

PADAWAN, July 8: Twelve strategic sites in Batu Kawa have been identified for closed-circuit television (CCTV) installation following a string of alarming incidents where vehicles were pelted with stones, prompting heightened security measures in the area.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Cr Tan Kai today revealed the proposed locations for the surveillance equipment, following a press statement by Padawan District Police on the arrest of the suspect behind the attacks.

The proposed CCTV installation sites include, Emart Batu Kawa (Cheing Pork Shop), Emart Batu Kawa, Emart Batu Kawa (in front of Pak Amit Cafe), MJC Park 1, MJC RHB Bank, MJC night market, MJC WL6, MJC Choice Marketplace, Everwin Batu Kawa, Batu Kawa old market roundabout, Batu Kawa riverbank, and Batu Kawa 38 Commercial Centre.

“The discussions between MPP and the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) on the installation of the surveillance system are ongoing to ensure the safety and security of Batu Kawa residents,” he said in a statement today.

This follows confirmation by Padawan District Police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi today on the arrest of a 68-year-old man suspected of hurling stones at passing vehicles along Jalan Batu Kawa.

The arrest was made by the Lejang Ibu Taskforce from Padawan Police Headquarters at 7.15pm yesterday (July 7), following a month-long patrol operation. A number of stones believed to be used in the incidents were also seized.

Mohd Irwan said police had received 10 reports related to the stone-hurling incidents, and the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing damage.

The suspect is currently being remanded for four days to assist in further investigations. — DayakDaily
