Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee chairman Charles Siaw said the flood was due to heavy rain and King Tide which caused the riverbank to swell.

“Heavy rain during the last few days and King Tide has resulted in flooding especially at low-lying areas,” he said.

In Song, 230 residents of a longhouse, Rumah Austin Ekau were affected by the flood.

Song Fire and Rescue Services Department reported that the 29-door single storey longhouse was under one foot of water.

However the residents were not evacuated as the situation is still manageable.

The situation is more critical in Kapit as the water level reaches up to two metres high.

A longhouse, Rumah John Ramba was inundated under two metres of water, forcing the 234 residents to be evacuated to higher ground.

The road to the longhouse is not accessible to vehicles, said Bomba.

Bomba added that Kapit town itself is under one metre of water which caused many shops to close for business.-DayakDaily
