KUCHING, July 26: The construction of the monsoon drain to mitigate floods at Lorong 3, Jalan Batu Kawa here is already completed at a cost of RM1.299 million.

Minister Of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said phase 1 of the project was completed in October last year and phase 2 in December last year.

“A very important project as part of flood mitigation for Jalan Batu Kawa,” he said in a statement in his Facebook page yesterday after inspecting the completed monsoon drain.

Dr Sim, who also Batu Kawah assemblyman, said phase 1 of the project was awarded to the contractor through open tender and was supposed to be completed in 2018.

“The non performing contractor was finally terminated after a lengthy procedure, causing the much delayed work,” he said, adding that it reflected some weakness of the open tender.

He said phase 1 of the project using the 2018 budget was through reopen tender at the cost of RM655,350 and phase 2 using the 2019 budget was also through open tender at the cost of RM643,919.

“Both happened to be won by the same contractor and they did a good job,” he added.

Dr Sim said those terminated non performing contractors should be blacklisted for all Sarawak government projects throughout the state. -DayakDaily
