LAWAS, Dec 5: Lawas Airport was forced to close today, when it was engulfed by flood after the collapse of the Lawas riverbank following heavy rain since yesterday.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd announced the temporary closure after the runway was flooded with over two feet of water.

State disaster management committee (JPBN) secretariat Major (PA) Ismail Mahedin in a statement at 7am said Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) had also issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) alert on the closure.

“The closure period depends on when will the water recede and the time needed to clear flood debris on the runway,” Ismail said. —DayakDaily
