Flood evacuation centres open in Kuching and Bau, 72 victims relocated

KUCHING, Dec 11: A total of 72 people including one infant have been relocated to two temporary evacuation centres due to flood today.

As of 9pm, 15 families are now at Dewan Masyarakat Stapok, Kuching (8 families) and Balai Raya Kg Jugan, Bau (7 families).

State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat head Major Ismail Mahedi from Sarawak Civil Defence Force said the flood relief centres were activated at 8pm following heavy rain since earlier today, causing some areas to be flooded.


The victims from Taman Seri Emas, Jalan Batu Kawa were placed at Dewan Masyarakat Stapok while those temporarily staying at Balai Raya Kpg Jugan were from the same village.

Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian also visited the evacuation centre at Stapok.

Meanwhile, over in Miri district, Ismail said 59 areas were affected by flood, in Telang Usan (6), Marudi (37) and Beluru (6).

Five schools namely SK Ubong Imang in Long Lama, SK Long Bemang Apoh in Tutoh, SK Morek, SK Long Lama and SK Long Sepiling also saw a rise between 1 to 2 feet of floodwater.

However, none of the schools are in operation due to the year end holidays.—DayakDaily
