KUCHING, Aug 13: The Sibu Street Parade 2023, which was held for the first time in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th anniversary of independence, was a lively and successful event, attracting thousands of citizens to the parade held last night (Aug 12) at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 in Sibu.
According to TVS, last night’s parade featured 60 contingents comprised of government agencies, the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and secondary schools.
Nursyawatiedina Abdullah, a 46-year-old housewife, expressed great excitement upon witnessing the parade.
“Before this, I watched the parade in Kuching, which was lively. I hope that this kind of programme will continue to be implemented every year as it effectively promotes the traditional clothing of diverse races in Sarawak, particularly among the younger generation,” she said, as quoted.
Meanwhile, Nur Viana Stephen, a 27-year-old private worker, arrived at the square grounds as early as 6pm to witness the parade.
At 8.15pm, the participating contingent performed a salute and performance on the main stage near Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang in the presence of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The procession then proceeded to Jalan Kampung Nyabor and concluded at the Chuang Corridor, covering a distance of two kilometres.
Following the parade, the audience was treated to an opening dance performance.
Earlier, MTCP Sarawak deputy minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew officiated the flag-off event at 7pm.
The celebration was even more exciting, with performances by Ramles Walter, an Acapella group, Airliftz, Rickie Andrewson, Chien Ng, and a standout performance by Hyper Act. A spectacular fireworks display further enhanced the festivities. — DayakDaily
