KUCHING, Jan 30: The first phase of the RM8.8 million Batu Kawah Waterfront project is currently on schedule and expected to be completed on time despite the rainy season.
Batu Kawah assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed confidence that the project will carry on as scheduled despite facing some delay due to the monsoon season since November last year.
“We are confident that the project will be completed without any delay. The rainy season at the end of last year has caused some unavoidable construction work delay.
“However, the project is running full swing and overall work progress is considered satisfactory,” the Local Government and Housing Minister disclosed in a statement issued after his visit to the site recently.
Among those accompanying the minister during his site visit were Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) councillor Yeo Shin Huat and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Segobang sub-branch chairman Lim Ah Ted.
The project, expected to be completed at the end of this year, was launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during an earth-breaking ceremony in June last year.
The first phase of the Batu Kawah Waterfront project consists of an icon building, The Sky Window of Batu Kawa, a 360-degree spectacle platform, whereby the public may get a bird’s eye view of the landscape near the Batu Kawah market.
The waterfront project site is situated under the Datuk Chong Kiun Kong Bridge (Batu Kawah Bridge) and is 800m long.
“It will become another tourist spot once completed and expected to be able to drive economic growth in the area,” Dr Sim opined.
According to the statement, the project was initially co-funded by the federal and Sarawak governments, but after Pakatan Harapan took over Putrajaya, funding for the project was cancelled. — DayakDaily
