Firefighters battling 250 acres forest fire at Eastwood

MIRI, Sept 26: Firefighters on ground and air are battling with an estimated 250 acres of forest fire behind Eastwood Valley golf course, here.

State Fire and Rescue assistant director (operations), Tiong Ling Hii, said based on their assessments, the two areas dubbed Sector A (185 acres) and Sector B (64 acres) are still burning.

“We’ve deployed a total of 16 firefighters including those from our air unit. Companies from Pantai Bayu and Naim are also assisting us with 30 and 17 people respectively in manpower and machines.


“Our methods are direct attack and create fire breaks and compacting using excavators provided,” Tiong said, adding that this is the third day of operations.

The department’s MI-171 helicopter has also conducted 21 aerial dumping, totalling 42,000 litres of water taken from Eastwood Valley golf club’s pond. — DayakDaily
