SIBU, Feb 15: Nine stalls at the temporary site for Taman Selera Muhibbah vendors at Jalan Tapang were completely destroyed in a noon fire today.

Quick action by firefighters prevented the fire from engulfing the other 31 stalls.

A Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson from the Sungai Merah fire station said they received a distress call at about 12.59pm concerning a large fire at the popular food court.

“Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters immediately cut the padlocks of the other stalls to remove gas tanks and sprayed water to prevent the fire from spreading,” he said.

Most of the stalls start operating in the evening.

Meanwhile Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said due to the fire, the council will move forward the operation date for the newly upgraded Taman Selera Muhibbah site at Jalan Pedada.

The council had earlier tentatively fixed March 2 for its opening.

“Since the new Muhibbah hawker centre is ready and the move was delayed at the request of the operators due to Chinese New Year, we will move forward the opening date to accommodate the current situation,” he said.

He added that the Jalan Tapang site will be closed as electricity supply has been disconnected. — DayakDaily
