KUCHING, June 8: The upper floor of a 688 outlet near Premier 101 in Jalan Tun Jugah here sustained major damage after a fire broke out this morning.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak responded to the emergency at 11.49am and swiftly mobilised a team of nearly 20 firefighters from the Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations to the scene.
According to initial reports, the fire started from the upper floor of the three-storey building, which is one of several chain stores in the city famous for selling a variety of Buddhist prayer paraphernalia and other traditional materials.
The upper floor, which was used as storage for papers and boxes sustained 90 per cent damage.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
Firefighters immediately took measures to break the fire from spreading and ultimately extinguished the blaze by 12.25pm. Additionally, they ventilated the roofing to disperse thick smoke while pinpointing the fire’s source.
Ongoing overhaul operations are in progress to cool down the premises, eliminate any remaining sources of ignition, and ensure site safety.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap were presence at the site earlier.
The operation concluded at 3pm. Bomba Sarawak stated that the cause of the fire is under investigation. — DayakDaily
