KUCHING, May 28: The technical and economic feasibility study for Tanjung Embang Deep Sea Port is in progress which includes site investigation, bathymetric surveys, tidal observations, sea current measurements, soil investigations, and environmental impact assessments.
These assessments, according to Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, are crucial to determine the port’s design, engineering parameters, long-term sustainability, and financial viability of the development.
“PETROS (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad) is currently undertaking an integrated master planning to ensure coordination across all components, including port infrastructure, energy systems, carbon capture, and industrial layout.
“PETROS is also in the process of engaging qualified international technical consultants to lead the development of the Kuching Low Carbon Hub (KLCH) masterplan,” said Uggah when presenting his ministerial address at Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.
On the establishment of a single port authority, Uggah who is also deputy premier said with the passage of the Sarawak Ports Authority Ordinance in May 2024, the Sarawak Government has been progressing towards the operationalisation of the single port authority, Sarawak Ports Authority, with regulatory jurisdiction over all port activities in Sarawak.
He said concurrently, the corporatisation of existing port authorities as successor companies at each port to manage port assets and operations is undertaken in tandem with the Sarawak Financial Secretary’s
Office.
The exercise is expected to conclude by the fourth quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile on port performances, Uggah revealed that for the Kuching Port, the cargo throughput increased by 7.7 per cent to 9.99 million tonnes; the Rajang Port by 4.6 per cent to 1.48 million tonnes; the Miri Port four per cent to 3.28 tonnes; Tanjung Manis Port 6.3 per cent to 1.63 million tonnes and the Samalaju Port’s cargo throughput soared by 22.5 per cent to 6.85 million tonnes.
On port profitability, he said the Kuching Port, the Rajang Port and the Miri Port made profits while the Tanjung Manis Port and the Samalaju Port recorded deficits.
The Kuching Port achieved 38 per cent increase to RM16.16 million, the Rajang Port a 3.5 per cent increase to RM6.21 million while the Miri Port registered 9.6 per cent increase to RM4.88 million.
The Tanjung Manis Port, on the other hand, recorded a reduced deficit of 24.74 per cent to RM5.14 million and Samalaju Port a diminished deficit of 83.57 per cent to RM0.47 million. — DayakDaily
