MIRI, Oct 12: A feasibility study for the highly anticipated Trans-Borneo Railway project, which aims to link Sabah and Sarawak to Indonesia, is expected to commence next month.
Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, announced the update during a press conference held following the closing ceremony of the MyLesen programme for the Miri parliamentary constituency today.
“The consultant for the study has been selected, and InsyaAllah, we will begin the necessary studies next month,” Hasbi said.
He emphasised that the study is crucial due to the increasing demand for land and cargo transportation across Borneo.
The one-year study will take into account State-level development plans, particularly those in Sarawak.
Hasbi stressed that the findings must align with Sarawak’s broader development goals.
“The study will ensure that the railway’s design is in line with Sarawak’s planning and development framework,” he added.
The deputy minister believes that the project holds great potential for Borneo’s connectivity and economic growth.
“After the study is completed, we will evaluate its results and move forward based on the feasibility findings,” he said.
The study marks a significant step toward improving transportation infrastructure in Borneo, with stakeholders eager to see the project’s impact on the region’s future development.
Miri MP Chiew Choon Man was also present at the event, which saw 914 applicants receiving their licenses. — DayakDaily
