Fatimah calls for thorough investigation into police lock-up rape incident

Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah

KUCHING, Jan 17: Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah is pleased that swift action was taken against a male detainee involved in rape case in Miri.

Fatimah in a statement today, said she was horrified and astonished as to how such an incident could occur in a police station lock-up.

ā€œI am glad that very swift action has been taken on the rape case, and the suspect has been charged in court on Jan 12, 2021, which was on the third day after the crime was committed, and the suspect had pleaded guilty,ā€ she said.

Fatimah released the statement in response to an article titled ā€œ16-year-old girl allegedly raped by male suspect while in police custodyā€ which was published by a local English daily on Jan 16, 2021.

Fatimah noted, a thorough investigation needs to be done without fear or favour.

ā€œThis is to regain public confidence in the safety of the suspect while still in police (custody),ā€ she added. ā€” DayakDaily
