KUCHING, March 4: Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof pointed out that there would be further discussion with the Indonesian government to be held later on how to overcome the labour shortage in Sarawak.
Fadillah said the labour shortage was caused by foreign workers being unable to enter Sarawak due to the process of entry requirements.
“The Sarawak government will discuss with their Indonesian counterparts on what can be done to ease the process of these entry requirements,” he told reporters when met after the ‘Juh Bekpes Bersama FY’ programme held at a coffeeshop in Metrocity, Matang today.
Fadillah explained that Malaysia has a clear policy of bringing in foreign workers into this country, but there is still an issue with other countries and their policies in supplying their labour forces to us.
He added that the entry of foreign workers has increased because the policies that Malaysia implemented has facilitated the entry of these workers and the process of recalibration.
“Foreign workers who are already in the country can stay longer and should be able to apply to work in the country as long as there are employers who are willing take them,”he said. — DayakDaily
