KUCHING, Dec 12: Padungan will undergo a new facelift which will include a new sport development and upgrading of Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre planned next year.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng in his Facebook ‘live’ streaming today said the projects were part of the initiatives and programmes to revitalise Padungan into a vibrant tourist attraction.

“I have presented some of the plans in Padungan for a new sport development to the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a courtesy call last Monday.

“There will be a few programmes for next year which will be conducted through the Tourism Ministry for the preservation of cultural and heritage in Padungan area and these programmes will be presented to the government for approval,” he added.

Wee added that details of the new sports development will be announced by Abdul Karim in due course.

On another note, he said there will also be a new community centre to be set up in Padungan.

“Hopefully the community centre will begin construction next year once the design of the building has been finalised and evaluated by the council.” he envisaged.

Wee said the project will be a collaboration between the public and the private sectors.

He noticed during his recent visit with Community, Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah to Kuching Municipal Council (KMC) Flats at Padungan last week, that there were some elderly people who needed healthcare services and assistance.

Thus he expressed hope that the community centre will serve as a facility to enhance the living of the elderly people. — DayakDaily
