KUCHING, Jan 14: Former Padungan assemblyman Dominique Ng has been elected as the new president of Sarawak Association for People’s Aspirations (Sapa).

The other office bearers are Hugh Lawrence Zehnder (deputy president), Nurul Hidayah Abu Bakar (secretary), Stephanie Liu (assistant secretary), David Chow (treasurer) and Gideon Chong (assistant treasurer).

The election was held during Sapa’s annual general meeting (AGM) here yesterday.

It was Sapa’s first AGM after it was declared an illegal society by then Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Nov 2014.

The ministerial declaration was later quashed by the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak vide a judicial review, and the decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal. The appeal by the previous federal government to the Federal Court was withdrawn by the Pakatan Harapan government on July 18, 2018.

At its first committee meeting, which was held immediately after the AGM, the newly minted committee immediately planned its activities for 2019.

Sapa will be organising the annual 722 Rally at the Central Padang this year.

To educate the public on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Sapa will be holding a series of seminars here and in Miri and Sibu. It also hoped to cooperate with all like-minded groups and organisations to organise such activities to push for the return of Sarawak’s rights.

Ng stressed that Sapa would remain strictly apolitical so as to group together the broadest spectrum of Sarawakians.

“We are quite proud to take note that in the new committee, besides the president himself, the two secretaries are also qualified lawyers,” said Ng in a statement today.
