KUCHING, Nov 1: The existing Saujana Building opposite Gurdwara Sahib Kuching is expected to be demolished as part of the area’s redevelopment, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says.
Speaking at the opening of Gurdwara Sahib Kuching’s extension building today, he said modern buildings would be developed around the area, extending towards Brooke Dockyard, with the planned Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) central station located in front of the Gurdwara.
“The next phase will be this [Saujana] building, which will be demolished.
“Modern buildings will be developed around this area, extending towards Brooke Dockyard while the ART central station will be located in front of the Gurdwara,” he said.
Abang Johari recalled the area’s history, including its former railway station during the Brooke era.
The ART central hub, known as Hikmah Exchange Station, is being developed at the former Padang Pasir parking lot, with the Red, Blue and Green lines set to converge there. The full ART system is targeted for completion in 2028.
He said the area’s transformation would reflect Kuching’s broader urban development while preserving its historical identity. — DayakDaily
