In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah explained that the couple, both of whom had lost their previous spouses, decided to marry after forming a deep connection based on mutual understanding and companionship.

The wedding was made possible through the support of the National Registration Department (NRD) and the church community.

“At Rumah Seri Kenangan, we believe that age should never be a barrier to finding happiness. The elderly deserve companionship to help them overcome loneliness and prevent depression.

“This marriage highlights the importance of relationships that offer both emotional and spiritual support,” she shared with the media after witnessing the event at NRD Sarawak Office, Jalan Simpang Tiga today.

She explained that the couple met all the institution’s criteria, including being free from mental illness and contagious diseases, and having no immediate family to care for them.

The wedding was a simple yet joyous occasion, with fellow residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan and members of the church community providing moral and spiritual support.

Fatimah also stressed the significance of shared values, such as religious beliefs and hobbies, in fostering lasting relationship.

“This couple actively engages in religious studies, which form a solid foundation for their bond. They also complement each other in daily activities like singing and sharing stories,” she added.

This marks the first wedding at Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching for 2025, and the institution hopes it will inspire other elderly residents to seek out companionship and happiness. —DayakDaily
