KUCHING, Oct 7: Police roadblocks which were implemented throughout the State due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic came to an end yesterday (Oct 6) after eight months of being in operation.

According to a news report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) yesterday, however, roadblocks that are part of ‘Ops Benteng’, which specifically targets illegal immigrants will continue at various key points in Sarawak.

Sri Aman police chief DSP Bingkok John when contacted by Ukas for a comment said although the roadblocks have been terminated, the public are reminded to continue to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

He said the police will increase the number of enforcement teams to ensure that the SOPs are complied with, by utilising the services of those who were stationed at such roadblocks previously.

Meanwhile, Bingkok disclosed that the roadblocks which were implemented since March this year had helped to reduce the crime rates in Sri Aman.

ā€œThroughout the period of its implementation, the crime index in Sri Aman was under control and showed a declining trend,ā€ he added.

On Oct 5, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) announced that a police permit is no longer required for inter-district travel in Sarawak affective Oct 6 onwards.

However, the committee said that police permits are still mandatory for inter-state travel. ā€” DayakDaily.
